The city schools I went to held the end-of-semester in the school's assembly hall, except that in high school I think one or two times the summer celebration (end-of-school-year) was held in the city's cathedral! Unfortunately I don't remember if there were any religious elements in these school ceremonies, other than the unavoidable summer psalms.
